IVAN MIJACEVIC MUST BE RELEASED

Srdjan Dizdarevic, President of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in BH, Senka Nozica, Vice President and Craig Janess, Deputy Chief of the OSCE Mission for human rights on 16 May 1997 visited Ivan Mijacevic in Doboj prison in the Republic of Srpska.
Ivan Mijacevic was arrested on 8 May in the territory of the Republic of Srpska, contrary to the Rome Road Agreement. He was charged for demolishing a house near Modric during 1993. The Rome Agreement on Road foresees that any bill of indictment for war crimes should be first submitted to the ICTY in the Hague. The arrest of persons charged for war crimes can be done only on the basis of the opinion of the Hague Tribunal.
The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in BH demand from the RS authorities to release immediately Ivan Mijacevic who was arrested contrary to the provisions of the mentioned Rome Agreement. At the same time, we demand from representatives of the international community to do all in their power to make the RS authorities to act according to the internationally adopted rules.
