Human Rights and
Destruction of Cultural Memory – Case Study: Stolac
The book represents
the results of work on definition of relationship between
destruction of cultural memory and human rights in the specific
case of Stolac. The goal of the book is to launch systemic
deconstruction and construction of knowledge on the relationship
between human rights and collective memory. That goal would be
achieved through examination of the meaning of verbal
constructions presented in contemporary legal framework and used
to define human rights, such as: cultural rights, religious
rights, right to identity, right to public space, right to
heritage. Each of these rights is examined in the context of
establishment of significance of cultural memory for survival of
a community as a framework for exercising of individual human
rights.

Herzegovina: From Dependence to Self-Sustainability
"This
edition is a continuation of thoughts about the situation in and
around Bosnia and Herzegovina, about the (un) walked road from

Introduction to Human
Rights
The aim of this book is to serve as a guide through
the world of human rights. It is your map. However, it is up to
you to embark on this journey on your own. You will meet, among
other things, the cruel reality here in Bosnia and Herzegovina,
but in the world as well – not in order to fall into desperation
and apathy, but to develop abilities and willingness to work on
protection of human rights by using your knowledge.
Enjoy your journey! Editors: Enver Đuliman and Gunnar
M. Karlsen

Human Rights Album “What the State Could Do or Should Not Do To
You”
In Sarajevo, on 18 September 1998, in the presence of a big
number of invitees, the Human Rights Album, published by the
Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in BH, was presented in the
Human Rights House of Sarajevo. The publication was printed in
5,000 copies and it is intended for the education of young
people, primarily pupils in elementary and high schools
throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, on what the human rights are
and what they are composed of. On that occasion, the professor
Vera Rakić, among else, said:
“… definitions of human rights in this Album are so simplified
that every man, including persons with poor education can
understand it. Already recognisable Bosnian language, used by
Mister Fetahagić, has become prominent. Conciseness and
picturesqueness of the style as well as adequate illustration of
the text proof that even monotonous legal expressions can become
more simple and understandable to all the people. The text is
followed and supplemented by fresh, clear and attractive
illustrations of Jelena Vranić. The characters given in all the
situations the text speaks about are so warmly and humanely
illustrated so that even a “man with weak side” does not look
unlikeable. There is nothing in the “Album” what does not mean
human understanding, goodness, humanity and justification of
proposed definition…”.

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS
by Jack Donnelly
The Helsinki
Committee for Human Rights in BH has translated the updated
edition of Jack Donnelly’s book “International Human Rights”,
which speaks of international relations in the area of human
rights since the end of Second World War, i.e. the ways in which
states and other international actors treat human rights. We
deem this book to be a highly valuable reading for all those who
want to get a deeper insight into these issues.

Human
Rights and Police
Most probably
there is no any institution of the state authorities in the
modern states except police which has at its disposal so
powerful and efficient means for protection, but also for
violation of human rights. Due to this, modern, democratic
states have been working, parallely on strengthening and
developing efficient, well trained and equipped police forces,
on making the police forces members aware of the power they have
and that it can be used only pursuant to the Constitution and
Law and on developing the institutions of the system which will
have full control over the lawful work of the police.
